inthinc Recognized as Healthy Worksite by State of Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Oct 09, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE)

inthinc, a developer and manufacturer of technologies to improve driving safety, today announced the company was recognized with the Healthy Worksite Award from the Utah Council for Worksite Health Promotion (UCWHP). The recognition is the result of an ongoing company-wide initiative to increase employee education and participation in healthy lifestyle activities.

The Healthy Worksite Award recognizes the outstanding achievements of businesses in implementing worksite programs, policies and work environments that support healthy lifestyles. The award was presented today at the annual UCWHP Annual Conference in a luncheon recognizing healthy organizations statewide.

Beginning in early 2007, inthinc (and predecessor company Inovar) put together an employee-led steering committee focused on healthy workplace issues. From that effort, several initiatives were put in place to collectively improve health and fitness within the company:

  • A program called "ing" (inthinc on the go) was launched to encourage employees to get moving, running, biking, hiking, skiing, etc., with calendars for employees to track "ing" time.
  • Monthly "ing" meetings are scheduled to award prizes and bring in guest speakers, such as dieticians, trainers, yoga instructors and hiking experts to discuss healthy lifestyle issues with employees.
  • Employees are encouraged to participate together through the organization of company teams and fitness activities including softball, soccer, flag football, basketball and a Saturday morning running club.
  • The company set up a designated walking trail around the office and provides gym membership discounts.
  • Healthy food is served at company events and addition of juice machines and healthy options in vending machines.
  • Free wellness screenings are provided for all employees and life coaches are offered to help lower health risks as needed.
  • Corporate philanthropy focuses on health and fitness initiatives, such as Relay for Life.
"We started out with a goal to increase the focus on health and fitness within the company, and we are thrilled with how our employees have embraced the opportunities we have provided," said Blake Kirby, president of inthinc. "Not only have we exceeded expectations for employee participation, but we have seen other unexpected benefits including a more unified workforce and a livelier work environment from employees participating in sporting activities together. We also have the ability to analyze our health claims in order to better structure our healthcare education practices."
